There are quite a few things that you can do to improve your website’s ranking. Good practices include (this is not an exhaustive list – just illustrative):
Google and other search engines use inbound links to a website as a measure of its ‘authority’ on a matter. The general rule is that the more links the better, but it’s worth avoiding so-called ‘link-building’ schemes in general.
As a very rough example, let’s imagine we run a business called Widget-Co, and we sell – yup you guessed – widgets.
If we build a good informative website, having considered all of the points in the above paragraph, and followed the guidelines correctly, Google for example may reward us with a notional 1000 points (versus say 200 for a badly configured site).
Now let’s say our customers create links to our website from theirs along the lines of – for widget sales visit widget-co
For arguments sake, let’s say for each of these links Google will add 20 points. You can see that for every 5 links we add 100 points to our perceived ‘authority’ on the matter of widget sales. Add 50 links and we have doubled our notional value.
