There are a large number of key factors relating to improving your search engine ranking and these can be broken down into three main areas:

  • Factors relating to the design and configuration of your website itself
  • Relationships that affect your website’s  ‘signposting’
  • Content Marketing

Your website’s design and content

There are quite a few things that you can do to improve your website’s ranking. Good practices include (this is not an exhaustive list – just illustrative):

  • correctly configured domains
  • good standards-compliant website design
  • good content structure
  • correct titling and tagging of content
  • well written copy
  • the use of images and links
  • the correct use of meta data tags
  • avoiding keyword stuffing which dilutes your results
  • updating your website regularly
  • fixing and removing dead links

Your website’s relationships on the internet

Google and other search engines use inbound links to a website as a measure of its ‘authority’ on a matter. The general rule is that the more links the better, but it’s worth avoiding so-called ‘link-building’ schemes in general.

As a very rough example, let’s imagine we run a business called Widget-Co, and we sell – yup you guessed – widgets.

If we build a good informative website, having considered all of the points in the above paragraph, and followed the guidelines correctly, Google for example may reward us with a notional 1000 points (versus say 200 for a badly configured site).

Now let’s say our customers create links to our website from theirs along the lines of – for widget sales visit widget-co

For arguments sake, let’s say for each of these links Google will add 20 points. You can see that for every 5 links we add 100 points to our perceived ‘authority’ on the matter of widget sales. Add 50 links and we have doubled our notional value.

Clearly there’s a huge benefit to be achieved by promoting your website online, and here are a wide variety of sources that can be used to leverage this value, but to name a few:

  • use of social networking ‘like this’ functionality to allow visitors to link your content
  • your use of social networking eg. Twitter and Facebook, to extend your website’s reach
  • using directory listings for localised searches
  • Google Places listings – seize and maintain your listing
  • your customers recommendations via their sites
  • trade bodies and memberships sites
  • accreditation scheme sites
  • local community sites

And of course many, many more. We have only scratched the surface of what’s possible, so please do contact us to find out more.

Content Marketing

Recent changes to Google have demonstrated the value that they place on high quality, well-written content. A few years ago, SEO was a largely black-art, practiced by technologists and other folks who talked in what seemed a foreign language. Nowadays, your website is more likely to bear fruits if you hire a content marketeer, copywriter or PR agency.

Better still perhaps, write it yourself. After all, you know your business better than anyone. You will still need to pay heed to some of the factors above of course, but we can help you to write good copy and develop strategies for creating unique engaging content that will get your site found.

You’ll need to consider distributing your content out too. Whether you push, or let others pull it, we can help you discover new channels to you target audiences.
